Circuit boards, also called as logic boards, are the brains of your garage door opener or gate operator. This has the radio frequency receiver that is needed for remote controls. Without this important part, one cannot operate the garage door properly. If your garage door opener suddenly does not respond and you have ruled other causes such as broken remotes or faulty parts, your circuit board might need repair or total replacing.

The common issues encountered when the circuit board fails is that the garage door stops midway in motion or will not open or close at all.

Repairing Circuit Boards and Logic Boards

You may want to repair your circuit or logic board before finally settling in replacing it. This ensures that you have exhausted all your options. This is also a less costly alternative in troubleshooting your problem.

You need basic tools to repair your circuit board. Make sure that you have a screwdriver, flux liquid, epoxy kit, utility knife, alcohol, a handheld drill, and a soldering iron.

Start off by removing the motor of the opener from the ceiling and loosening all its screws. Remove the circuit board and check if there are any cracks. If there are a few, use the epoxy to glue the broken pieces together. Just follow the instructions on the epoxy. The epoxy liquid adheres well to the circuit board and will dry in half an hour.

Use the utility knife to scrape off debris from the cracked parts of the board, especially along where the damage is. Solder the broken parts together to seal the board. Apply the flux liquid over broken pieces but do not overdo it. Then, solder over the flux liquid to create a seal.

Apply alcohol on a clean cloth and wipe off any excess flux liquid. With your handheld drill, drill a hole at the end of the crack. Ensure that the hole is centered directly on the crack to prevent the crack from extending. Then, replace the circuit board and reinstall the motor back to its original position.

If repairing the circuit board is no longer possible, you’re left with replacing the entire board. Although it is possible to replace the circuit or the logic board of your garage door, one should check the compatibility of the replacement with your specific models. Some models no longer carry replacement boards, which means you have to purchase a new garage door opener already. So, ensure that you’ve checked with your manufacturer or replacement supplier regarding compatibility.

Once you’ve already purchased the right circuit board for your opener, you may need a stepladder, wrenches, screwdrivers, nut drivers, and pliers. Start off by unplugging your garage door opener from the outlet or turning off the circuit breaker.

Use the stepladder to access the motor where the circuit board is located. Remove the cover and unscrew the bulb on your opener. With your nut drivers, remove the back panel cover to get to the circuit board. Disconnect the wires that connect the opener to the circuit board. Loosen the screws that keep the board in place and remove the circuit board.

Install the new circuit board into the garage door opener. Just place it where the old one was located and start screwing it in place. Reinstall the wires into the new board and ensure that they are locked in position. Replace the back panel cover and return the bulb. Secure the opener cover and plug the opener to the outlet. Make sure that you test your garage door opener if it is now working as it should.
